Gitta
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5
An old, gray-haired man was sitting in the subdued light of the hospital room with his daughter's hand in his. He had been sitting that way since the previous evening. His eyes had flickered a few times, but he had always quickly opened them again -- by sheer force of will.
At half past three in the morning, his 40-year-old daughter breathed her last. Quietly.
He heard her strained breathing becoming shallower with every breath, and it stopped after only half a minute. It was what you might call a peaceful death.
An older nurse came hurrying in and turned on the room’s bright overhead light. She quickly checked the monitor above the bed with an experienced glance. Breathing and heartbeat had both stopped. She summoned help with the touch of a button, but immediately began to examine the patient for herself.
The tall gray-haired man raised himself with difficulty and walked slowly across the room without saying a word, then down the dark hospital corridor, down the stairs, and out into the dark parking lot in front of the hospital. There were only a few cars there at this time of the night, and he locked himself into his black Range Rover.
He sat in the driver's seat, staring out into the darkness. The first tears forced their way past his eyelids and slipped down his wrinkled cheeks. They opened the way for his collapse. His face twisted into a grotesque grimace, and he collapsed over the steering wheel and began sobbing loudly and bitterly in the dark autumn night. Knud Emmanuel Tranedal wept for the first time in many years. The last time was 40 years ago, when his beloved daughter Gitta was born and her mother died immediately afterwards.
And now Gitta was dead, too.

"The story of The Price of Greed is very topical."
"Absolutely worth reading. The book is thought-provoking and entertaining with its descriptions of our society in all its facets."
"Wow! The Price of Greed totally captivates me! It's a fantastic book -- well written and absolutely interesting reading material. It's really difficult for me to find enough superlatives! The Price of Greed is one of the best books I've read this year."
"Buckle up and hold on -- this author can write! I've always missed his kind of literature in the thriller and crime genre, where you are spoiled with linguistic finesse, social observations and details, even when something exciting is unfolding."
"The book is exciting, the story is realistic, and the plot is interesting. The reader takes part in a well-written social thriller from everyday Danish life."

THE FJORD PAVILION
Friday, February 3

In Haubjerg, people often snickered when you mentioned the Fjord Pavilion in Lystskoven. It was a fact that many older people in the city had been conceived there in connection with the place's renowned summer balls.

Time went by, young people in the next generations looked for new pleasures, and the Fjord Pavilion faded to a pitiful shadow of its former glory. The wear of the elements peeled paint away from the whitewashed buildings, a musty and stale smell took hold of the rooms with the breathtaking views of the fjord, the bowling alley was crushed by a rotten tree during an autumn storm, and the kitchen became so small that nobody drove out of town to enjoy a couple of thick sandwiches on the terrace any more. A local carpenter filed a bankruptcy petition on the place.

Then, one December night, everything just went wrong. The fire probably started in the kitchen, and the Fjord Pavilion was turned into a pile of ashes with a few charred uprights in less than an hour. Everybody in Haubjerg talked about insurance fraud, but there was never any case for that. The insurance payout quickly disappeared into the pockets of the creditors, and the former owner left the city, nobody knew where to. The bankrupt estate was now run by credit union lawyers who asked that the property be put up for a forced auction.

TAKE OFF
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16

The 275-ton Airbus A340 accelerated off the longest runway at Narita International Airport just east of the center of Tokyo. The 300 passengers were pressed back into their seats, and many of them involuntarily tightened their grips on the armrests of the seats. As SAS flight number SK984 broke through the low-hanging clouds, the midday sun shone in through the small windows, lighting up the entire cabin.

Not all of the seats in Business Class were occupied. Of the two seats at the front of the cabin, only the window seat was occupied. Here, a fairly young woman was sitting alone, looking down at the rolling white landscape made up of the sun-drenched cloud cover.

To a European, she looked quite Asian, but most Japanese people would clearly note her European features. Her name also evoked her ethnically mixed ancestry: Sakura Toft. Her last name she had received from her father -- Victor Toft --, while her Japanese mother Misaka had insisted that she bear the romantic first name Sakura, which means 'cherry blossom' in Japanese.
